Mass Effect is an action-packed role-playing game set in a science fiction universe. Players are cast as Shepard, a human agent tasked with protecting the universe from an all-powerful extra-dimensional force determined to enslave all life in the galaxy.
RPG developer Bioware launched the series in 2007, following it up with an outstanding sequel earlier this year.
According to the report, Bioware bigwigs Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will nab executive producer credits as part of the deal.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mass Effect 2 ( and it’s predecessor Mass Effect), the game is equal parts space opera and tactical shooter, with some light RPG elements thrown in. You might think that this mix of gaming types would produce a disjointed experience but Mass Effect 2 is an unusually smooth and intuitive game to play.
The characters are all nicely fleshed out with distinct back stories, and if they are a bit formulaic, each is very well realized.
In my opinion, Mass Effect has the potential to be the most successful film franchise ever realized from a video game. It blends the melodrama and idealism of Star Trek with the grittiness, moral ambiguity and taut battle sequences of Battlestar Galactica.
It should be one hell of a ride!
OH and be sure to check out the IDW Mass Effect Comic Book series still on sale at CBJ !!!
(Gotta love those shameless plugs!!!!!)
That’s 30!
