Tales From the Back Issue Bin #2!

Hello kiddies, it's time for another
Dun Dun Dun
TALES FROM THE BACK ISSUE BIN!!!!

Before I dive head first into today's craptastic issue, I'd like to say that I've finally caught myself up on X-factor. All I have to say about it is 'WOW'. If you've never read the book before, new or old, pick up the trades, believe me, it's worth every penny.

So, from the illustrious $1.00 section, this week's book is:

'Warriors of Plasm' #1

The first thing I noticed about the book was the David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Young Liars) did the cover and interiors. This had me ready for good things. The book was really good until I had to start reading what Jim Shooter had written. The dialogue in this book can be described and one thing, verbal diarrhea. Meaningless conversation panel after panel. I didn't know what was going on until page 10, at least. It comes as a total surprise that Defiant Comics went under, with super high quality books like this. Thank GOD Lapham had a career after this.

So down to why this book sucks, the story is so dumb and pointless it's not even funny. The book starts on the planet Plasm, a living organism that needs to devour other planets to survive. Sounds familiar.... Well, their next target is Earth. So they abduct 5 humans. From Jersey. That's a good way to studies the human race, 5 people from Jersey. They do their tests and set them free. Well, alter their genes, then set them free. You don't see them free on earth at the end of the issue, but they talk about letting them go. The sometimes non-sensible ramblings leave much to be desired in a first issue. While a slightly borrowed idea, not a terrible one. If better written I would have searched out the rest of the series based on the concept alone. It could have been worth to see where it goes, but Shooter just plain ol' sucks the big one.

So, this week I'll give "Warriors of Plasm" #1
1.5 Dio heads out of 5

The book sucked. Plain and simple. The extra half head is only because Lapham's art is extraordinary. That's it. I wish there was more to say other then Jim Shooter sucks.

I really do wish.

Well, stay tuned for the next face melting instalment of:

NEWS & EVENTS FOR THE WEEK OF 11/11/09

We've got a TON of news to talk about this week including more details on our new rental program, our famed Black Friday sale, our grand opening party and of course our second anniversary party which will be kicking off on December 17th. Here we go!

TRADE PAPERBACK & GRAPHIC NOVEL RENTAL PROGRAM

We are in the midst of setting up a rental program for trades and graphic novels but we need your help to do it! If you are interested, start bringing your old graphic novels and other trade paperbacks into the store for credit towards rentals. They can be in any condition as long as they are READABLE.

Still ironing out all the details but the program is going to work like this: All you have to do is purchase a membership for $20, this starts you off with 8 points. You use these points to rent books, their point value being determined by the price of the book itself. You can purchase additional points or get them for free by attending events at the store or by spending a certain amount of money at the store. In addition, any books you bring in for the program will give you points to use towards rentals for yourself.

This is meant as a way to get you into books you wouldn't normally read or check out. To top it all off, any money you spend towards the rental of a book is deducted off the cost if you ultimately decide that you like it enough to purchase a brand new copy. So start getting those old books into the store!

ORIGINS OF BATGIRL FRAMED LITHOGRAPH RAFFLE SIGNED, SKETCHED, AND NUMBERED BY CARMINE INFANTINO

Another week, another raffle! This time we are raffling off an "Origins of Batgirl" framed lithograph signed and numbered by artist Carmine Infantino. This is a limited and rare piece that features original sketches at the bottom of the lithograph. It retails for around $250. As always, tickets are only $1 per raffle. Make sure you don't miss the chance to win this awesome piece of art! This raffle ends on Wednesday, November 11th.

Thursday, November 5, 2009

When I was growing up as a kid in Canarsie, most of my friends wanted to be big league ballplayers. They saw themselves hitting a homerun to win the World Series. My own dreams were a bit more modest. I wanted to WRITE about it!. My heroes were the Maddens, Starks and Gallos. And so today I am going to write my very first baseball column!

So what if it is my very first baseball column posted on a Comicbook site? Complain too much and I might frag ya with my adamantium Louisville Slugger…

Last night the New York Yankees christened their brand new billion dollar playground with their 27th World Championship. 27th…just roll that around your brains for a moment. Not only is it far and away the most championship in Major League Baseball, it is the most championships of ANY professional sport. It speaks to a tradition to excellence that goes back to the 1920’s and has continued pretty much unabated to this day. Here is something else to chew on…

This year the Yanks won their 40th AL pennant since 1923, which means that the Bombers have appeared in nearly HALF the World Series over that span.

I realize that a great many people will point to the Yankee pocketbook as the reason that they have been winners. To which I say BLEAH! To be sure money IS a great advantage and allows you to eat your mistakes. BUT money does not guarantee championships. All you need to do is look at the Yanks since 2000 and the Mets over in the NL in recent years. Your front office must spend the money wisely. They must put together a TEAM that is given an opportunity to succeed . And they have to be lucky enough to stay healthy and avoid the mine field that is the current two tiered playoff system.

The 2009 Yankees did all those things. They played tough. They played with heart, leading the Majors in come from behind wins. They pitched, and played their best defense in years. When confronted by the World Champion Phillies who were the very best team in the NL, the Bombers flat outplayed them.

We saw one player find vindication – A-Rod will never again hear the word “choke” as an addendum to his name. he showed us all why he is the best player of his generation and the most gifted Yankee since Mickey Mantle.

We saw another player show his value – Jorge Posada missed almost all of last season to injury and it was no coincidence that the Yanks failed to make the playoffs since 1995. Jeter is the Captain of the Yankees, Jorge is the heart.

We saw a Hall Of Famer showing us all why he is a winner – Derek Jeter hit .407 in the series, scoring five runs and playing great defense. Derek is described by his peers with the highest praise. They call him a “winner”

We saw how Baseball is truly an international game – Hideki Matsui, WS MVP!
We saw an old warhorse go to war again – The gutty, gritty Andy Petitte won all THREE clinching games in the post season and was not to be denied even on three days rest.
And finally…the incomparable Mariano Rivera who gave up ONE run in 16 innings this post season and NONE in the World Series. Want to know the difference between the Yankees and everyone else? It is MO. He was the only closer IN the Post season not to have at least one implosion that cost his team a game. Last night when the Yanks were up 7-3 in the 8th and the Phils saw Mariano they knew it was over.

Baseball has become a 12 month a year sport and the Hot Stove Season is poised to begin. In short order we are going to hear about all the “holes” the Yankees need to plug in order to repeat. But that is for tomorrow.

For today the Yanks are World Champions. There is a parade outside my office window tomorrow here on lower Broadway.

All is right with the world!

That’s 30!

Mitch

Previews and Reviews with Gore Jones

Whaddup World!

I'd just like to say to all my fellow NY Yankees fans, Congrats. It was a good World Series and the Phillies weren't a pushover. Moving right along...

Don't forget! Next Friday the 13th @ Cargo, CBJ is finally having its GRAND OPENING PARTY along with our friends over at BOUND FOR GLORY TATTOOS. It starts @ 10 and is going to be crazy fun. Mark your Calendar NOW!

Now onto what I thought was rockin and what sucked in the world of comics this week.

Stumptown #1

Did you happen to see this title on your checklist this week? Did you happen to walk past it when you were picking out your books yesterday? Well stop. look down. pick up this book and read it. In fact, buy it, go home and read it and then thank me. Greg Rucka's new book Stumptown dropped this week and it's awesome. Dexedrine C. Parios who everyone calls "Dex" is a private investigator as well as a bad gambler. She finds herself in the hole for 17,000 and change to the Confederated Tribes Of The Wind Coast Casino. She is given a do or die deal where she has to find the Casino owners grand daughter. From there it's twists and turns as she begins to put the pieces together and starts finding out that this is some smaller piece to something way bigger. Fans of Ed Brubaker's Criminal, Jason Aaron's Scalped and crime noir books in general will fall head over heels for this book. It's only the first issue and already I want more. Here's a little food for thought: This is what "Dex" was named after.

Dextroamphetamine is a psychostimulant drug which is known to produce increased wakefulness and focus in association with decreased fatigue and decreased appetite.

Haunt #2

Last month I said how much this book felt like it was the bastard child of Spawn. Simple because Todd Mcfarlane is one of the writers and I felt his influence all over the place.
This issue I get my foot put in my mouth up to the knee. Robert Kirkman is the other writer on the book and in this issue you really get the sense that he's the one driving the car.
Our story continues as Daniel and the recently deceased Kurt Kilgore combine to become Haunt.. actually... we don't know the amalgamations name yet. After stopping some hit men from gunning down Kurt's wife, they call in a specialist to clean up the mess they've made disemboweling said hit men. Without giving away the rest of the story it's not the bastard child of Spawn. Kirkman really shines in his writing. The conversations between the Kilgore brothers when they're combined and apart are very reminiscent of "The Walking Dead", "Invincible" and even "Marvel Team-Up". One brother has been trained to be a killer and the other is so desensitized by his brother's stories that killing doesn't affect him like he thought it would. Mcfarlane's elements aren't lost either but nicely tucked into Kirkman's dialogue. The espionage and crime feel are a major layer in the story but not the overall flavor of the book as a whole. Not to mention that Greg Capullo and Ryan Ottley do an amazing job of complimenting each others work. I hope this book continues the way it's going because it's got a lot of potential.

Deathlok The Demolisher #1

In a near distant future, corporate governments no longer have wars or conflicts on their own or foreign soil but battle it out in THE BATTLEZONE! Thats the premise of this new take on Deathlok. Charlie Huston takes the basic premise of a solider turned into a cyborg for profit and sport and gives it the modern day twist of our own professional athletes hungry for fame and fortune.
In this future, The Roxxon Broadcast Company airs Battlezone in which nations battle with teams of troops instead of whole armies over their conflicts. Combatants just like sports players gain stats known as kill points for each death on the battlefield, depending on what type of kill they make they get extra points, i.e; a close kill is worth more points than a ranged kill. The star player of BattleZone is Mike Travers, a cocky, over the top one man show who doesn't care about strategy or who he's fighting for or why just that he wants to continue his endorsements and keep his kill points up.
This book thus far hits the nail on the head and hard. Huston like I said takes the sports theme and really gives it the one two punch. Travers character is so concerned with being in the limelight that when he's told he's going to be given command of his own squad and needs to be concerned with caring for their lives along with winning, he just brushes it off and makes snide comments and rushes off to get interviewed. Travers character mirrors many examples of how fame and fortune go to your head just like many of our favorite players do. From murder to drugs, just because your famous you think your unstoppable.
"Deathlok" didn't even show up in the issue and it was awesome. Great set up and some really well placed undertones. Any fan of Deathlok, Rollerball or the Running Man will really enjoy this book. It's a seven issue mini-series so if this is an example of what's to come, I'm stoke.

Cinderella: From Fabletown with love #1

Spinning out of the pages of probably the best monthly book Fables, comes this mini-series starring everyone's favorite princess turned spy Cinderella. Agent Glass Slipper is given the task of finding and recovering magical items of power from their homelands that have made their way into the Mundy world aka our world. Cinderella is the James Bond of Fabletown. She owns a shoe store as well as globe trots on missions dealing with Fabletown. She's got fables that she's been using as agents since her first coming to the Mundy world after escaping the homelands during the emperor's rule. Quickly given information from both Beast (of beauty and the beast) and Frau Totenkinder (the witch from Hansel and Gretel) about the situation of how these artifacts need to be obtained quickly before exposing Fabletown along with the homelands being up for grabs since the fall of the empire. Cinderella is given no easy task and makes her way towards the beginning of her adventure. If you're not reading Fables then get to work on that ASAP because it truly is the best comic out there in my opinion. This series I'm sure will have some ramifications of the core book in some future storyline so keep your eyes open. Great set up and quick movements make this book worth the read and something extra for fans of Fables.

Doom Patrol #4

This weeks serving of Blackest Night is Doom Patrol #4. I'll say this off the bat, I'm not the biggest fan of the new Doom Patrol book and I think Keith Giffen has been taking his time molding the book into what his interpretation is, not a bad thing but four issues in and it's still sludgy. This being a Blackest Night tie in makes this issue a little better. The Doom Patrol are no strangers to members dying and this is where Giffen really has some fun. He's got a bullpen of dead characters to play with and this is just the first part of the story. All in all not a bad issue. I'm curious to see what happens next and I think everyone else is too.

Time To Make Your Holiday Gift Lists!

OK Ya Gold bricking Yahoos!

It’s time to get ready for the holidays and my ideas about what should be in every hobbiest’s collection. If you DON’T have them, now is the time to get them on your lists and send your loved ones scurrying to CBJ to pick ‘em up! (Don’t you love unbridled avarice?!)

1) Marvel Masterworks Hardcovers! - Whether you are a Spideyophile, an X-person or a wannabe Ben Grimm, the best way to get your mitts on those early adventures from Marvel’s Halcyon Days of Yore (short of mortgaging the house) is these little gems! You can even save a few shekels by going for the paperbacks but Hardbound books are forever!

2) Women Of The DC Universe Mini Busts – just because they are so cute!

3) EC Collections – If you have never read the great 1950’s EC Horror, War and Crime comics…why you can hardly even BE a comic book aficionado! These were the 1950’s version of comics for adults and were wildly popular among college students, until Frederick Wertham came along and …uhhh….pooped on the party! They are also available in hardbound, slipcased editions.

4) DF Holiday packs – This year they are doing Cap #600 and Spidey #600 variant packs at only $20 retail. It is a great way to get into variant collecting if you are interested.

5) PS3/X-Box360 – NOT a comic book I grant you but with all the great comic related games that came out this year, NOW is the time to get that next-gen console!

6) …and for your brand new baby game system, you must have Batman-Arkham Asylum, X-Men origins Wolverine and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. I played all of these games and they all ROCK!

7) Bags and Boards – A case of each and you may not have to worry again for a whole year! AND they look like BIG gifts wrapped under the tree!

8) Fleisher’s ultimate Superman Collection – The original 18 Superman cartoons made by Fleisher Studios back in the 1940’s . Every fan of Superman OR classic animation must have these gems! And while you’re at it add Fleisher’s Popeye collections to your list as well!

9) Star Trek – The 2009 Blockbuster is out on DVD and BluRay on November 17th. It is a must, IF you can wait for the holidays and not run out to get it right away.

10) Doc Savage and The Shadow Double Novels – These Pulp Magazine throwbacks are becoming very popular and are a great value. If you want to see what comics were like before the pictures, you want these. They are also great for stocking stuffers!

11) The Super Goof Mini Maquette – For the Comic AND Disney lover in all of you. Celebrate the merger with this great statue!

12) Famous Monster Art of Basil Gogos volume 1 and 2 – If you are familiar with the wonderful FMF Magazine and the cover art, this is a great collection. If you ARE’NT familiar with it then it is STILL a great collection. It really deserves a place on your bookshelf!

13) Overstreet Comic Book price Guide – just because!

14) Waffle’s Waffles – Not many people know it but CBJ’S world famous Waffle markets frozen…uhhh waffles…and I just made that up…so don’t actually go shopping for the waffles of Waffle…though maybe he DOES make waffles…do you?

15) Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus editions – Buffy…comics…Buffycomics…nuff said!

And there you have it…fifteen…FIFTEEN…well fourteen anyway can’t live without holiday gift ideas! As for me I am hoping that someone delivers the original 1966 Batmobile to my doorstep on Christmas morning but that may be hoping for a bit much!

That’s 30!

Previews and Reviews with Gore Jones

Happy Belated Halloween World!

I hope everyone had an awesome holiday. Sorry for being a slack-ass and being mega late but it's been a hell of a time for yours truly. Now onto a special Halloween edition of Previews and Reviews!

Trick r' Treat The graphic novel

Anyone who hasn't seen this film yet really needs to go and get a copy now. Don't rent it, don't borrow it, don't download it...GO OUT AND BUY IT! It's probably the best Halloween movie in god knows how long. Director and writer Michael Dougherty brings to life the essence of good cinema along with the anthology formula of tales from the crypt based around every horror fans holiday HALLOWEEN! DC brings us the graphic novel interpretation of the film. Written by ex-Manhunter scribe Marc Andreyko and illustrated by some of the top up and comers this graphic novelization of the film is worth every penny. They do take some parts of the film out and extend others but all in all it's worth owning and re-reading however many times you can.

Dark Reign The List: The Punisher

I've tried to stray away from really covering anything having to do with Dark Reign because it's a very wide spectrum to cover and simply put everyone seems to be a little tired of it thus far. This one shot though really needs to be brought up because 2 things happen.
(Sorry if you haven't read the issue yet cover your eyes!)
1) Norman Osborn shows how far he's really willing to go to cross off the names on his list by having countless HAMMER agents hunt Castle
2) He sends in Daken to disembowel Castle with no reguard for who sees him and what the cost of damage is.

Jesus H.! What a bloody issue, what a mess, poor Frank Castle. Wow, Rick Remender really goes above and beyond in this one because he just took everyone's favorite Marvel vigilante and turned him into dog food. I mean he really put up a good fight with Daken through the sewers and warehouses but he really had no chance. Marvel has been campaigning pictures with R.I.P and Frankencastle promos for a couple of months now so you knew he was going to die and is being brought back as a "monster" but the reality of actually seeing it and reading it is so much more graphic and haunting.
This is a book every collector and Punisher fan needs.

FVZA: Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency #1 (of 3)

Holy $**T! This book is awesome from cover to cover. David Hine and Roy Allan Martinez bring to life a website that "explains how the two forms of the living dead really exist" FVZA.org and turned it into a comic I wish Radical Comics would turn into an ongoing. The Art work is the first thing that bites you. Roy Allan's work is amazing, the colors and everything make you want to turn the page. David Hine's story telling is so masterful that you feel like your in a trance and being sucked into the book as you turn the pages. Amazing.
The concept of the story is simple, Vampires showed up with the earliest of American settlers and not to soon after that Zombies showed up. The two are different ends of the same disease. The U.S government gets involved following the Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant sets up the Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency bringing in militia's across the states to hunt down the menace of the living undead. The story continues up until the 1950's where President Kennedy announces the cure for Vampirism and that the FVZA has done it's job and any smaller outbreaks with be dealt with accordingly. Dr. Hugo Pecos teaches his grandchildren about the monsters threat and prepares them for the day they might resurface. Well they resurface.
You need this book in your life. It's amazing.

Necrosha One shot

New Mutants #6

This week begins Marvel's trek into the reanimation of dead MUTANT heroes and villians in Necrosha. The Black Queen aka Selene begins to reanimate the dead using the techno organic virus that Bastion and Co. used to bring back key figures in the X-books. She begins her assualt on the newly formed Utopia, attacking the X-Men while they're on some well needed downtime for the moment. It's a great one shot and really cool story because we get to see the who's who of dead mutants come back and cause havoc but I feel like this is Marvel's answer to Blackest Night. There are too many elements that echo the series. The fact that both hero and villan are coming back under Selene's control yet they still retain some semblence of their former selves is the only thing that stands out at this point. I hope during the course of this crossover they really begin to grow in a different direction all together because we're all already reading a story about dead super powered beings coming back to life.

3 out of 5

Another book dealing with Necrosha this week is New Mutants #6 where we follow Douglas Ramsey aka Cypher on his mission to kill Selene's grand daughter the New Mutant known as Magma. It's an odd story because the team just got back from dealing with Legion and they're still slowing coming back together as a unit. During their reunion with Professor X, Cypher watches and deciphers their body language as to what it all truly means. Cypher then makes his presence known as he bludgeons Magma to death. The team fights him but because he can read body language they get their asses handed to them like rookies. Warlock the phalanx life form shows up because he senses Cypher and attempts to stop him from whatever is controlling him but to no avail, he gets decapitated. Being a fan of The New Mutants from way back when, I really enjoy how Zeb Wells brings in elements from the old series and is incorporating it into this new one along with the story line of Necrosha. This is a good example of how I said I'd hoped that they strayed away from the Blackest Night elements. Cypher retains key elements of his former self along with the possibility of being able to overcome Selene's influence. We'll see where this continues as the story progresses.

Blackest Night #4

Blackest Night Titans #3 of 3

Green Lantern #47

This week we're given 3 big helpings of Blackest Night. First up is the Blackest Night proper itself. This issue is jam packed with action as the shit hits the fan and things really make a turn for the worse as Barry Allen, Ray Palmer and Mera attempt to rally all the remaining superheroes as to the situation and what they think should be done to attempt to stop the Black Lantern menace. A little side note, as Jean Paul Azrael walks around killing in Gotham City, The Scarecrow wants in on the action but gets no attention as to being emotionless. This is going to play a role in the later conflict I can feel it now. As the end of the issue comes, Black Hand brings the Black Battery to earth and rises up Nekron Lord of the dead and the master he's been communing with these past few months. This series gets better as it goes. Marvel's got some serious competition.

5 out of 5

Blackest Night Titans #3 finishes off this mini dealing with the Titans and their skirmish with reanimated members. I think this series actually didn't need to be any longer than 3 issues. They surmised everything they needed to hint or touch on quite well in the span they had and gave light to some new revelations like Donna Troy being bitten and now having some strange connection to the Black Lanterns and Dove being able to disconnect the rings from their undead hosts and become a serious weapon for our heroes.

5 out of 5

Green Lantern #47 rounds out this weeks Blackest Night banquet. I'll make this one short sweet and to the point. We find out that combining the different colors of the emotional spectrum defeats the black rings. Hal, Carol, Sinestro and Indigo-1 head over to Odym to gather Blue Lantern Saint Walker and we learn that The Red Rage Lanterns have no hearts and therefore are a viable weapon if they can get them to help without getting killed themselves. Geoff Johns knocking out of the park left and right.

The Return Of Everyone's Favorite, Tales From The Back Issue Bin!

Wow, it's been a WHILE.

Well, here goes nothing.

Welcome to the new (but not necessarily improved)
TALES FROM THE BACK ISSUE

Feels good to be doing this again. We've got so many new back issues(if that makes sense) in stock that I am very excited to get to read some extremely terrible, and hopefully some good, stories.

So, what I do is I go section by section through our back issue bins and read a random book from each section, regardless if I've read the ones before or after, and tell you about my journey.

Simple, right?

We'll, instead of starting over again from the $1.00 comics section, I choose a very special issue of "The Incredible Hulk" for the return of TFTBIB. (Ya gotta love huge acronyms.)

"The Incredible Hulk" Vol. 1 #290

This issue was amazing. And by far not in a good sense of the term. This issue starts off with the Abomination running from the Hulk with one of his lady friends in tow. When confronted by A.I.M, he pretty much shits his pants and gives up. What the hell? He's the Abomination. He throws down with the Hulk all the time, and walks away from it. But a bunch of dudes in yellow jump suits makes him piss himself? Please. At least he's not as big of a joke as M.O.D.O.K is. Gotta love the big floating head. But this issue gives birth to a character that should still be around today, Ms.M.O.D.O.K. Look at that beautiful mug, who wouldn't want a piece of that? Gorgeous. So, one of the Hulk's lady friends gets turned into that thing, and falls extremely large head over heels for M.O.D.O.K. They connect, fall in love, and are ready to be wed. God knows what that ceremony would look like, let alone the cavalcade of awesome villains and crappy heroes that would be in attendance. The Hulk gets all pissy because his lady is gonna be swingin' with the big guy. So, he trys to get in the way, but good ol' abomination steps in and gets destroyed. Then after M.O.D.O.K kills the Abomination, he.... Wait. He killed the Abomination in this issue? Wasn't he shot by *shudder* Rulk? Oh, Mephisto brought him back in "Secret Wars II"? Good to know that Marvel's back up plan is to always let the lord of darkness fix it. Well, after he temporarily kills Abomination, Ms.M.O.D.O.K (man, typing that is getting annoying) believe it was wrong and fights back. After a few mind blasts, she is puched back into the glowing floor tile that made her head swell, and is back to normal.

What a pointless issue. The creation, and destruction of a character in one issue. Gotta love it. The Hulk in this issue is a smart hulk, who is extremely articulate, whitch makes me laugh almost everytime he opened his mouth. With lines like "Now that's an astute observation if I've ever heard one!" That's in response to an A.I.M agent saying "We're under attack!" (I'd put the two panels up, but the scanner isn't letting me do anything.) You don't have be a dick, Hulk. They're just guy in bucket helmets with ray guns, take it easy buddy.

Oh, also, every week, I will give each book a rating out of 5 and give my reasons why.

So, for "The Incredible Hulk" #290, I'll give it
3 Dio Heads Out Of 5

The issue made me laugh, even when it wasn't supposed to, and that's fine by me. If you like your villains cheesy and hilarious, you should deffinatley check out anything that stars M.O.D.O.K. It's all insanely funny stuff and worth hanging out in the lounge to read, at least.

So, I'll see you boys and girls next sunday where I'll start from the begining of the bins.

Until then, I'll see you at the shop!

-Waffle
