Previews and Reviews with Gore Jones

What up peoples?! Back again for another dose of what I thought was awesome and what sucked! Just got back from a weekend in Delaware playing a show out there with my band (The Grieving Process) and got tattooed by BUZ HASSON of The Living Corpse comic. If you're ever down by New Castle, DE drop by and say hello to him over at Explosive Tattoos!.. Now on with the show..

Captain Britain and MI-13 #15 (Final Issue)

I'm soo mad that this series was cancelled. SO MAD!!! Paul Cornell really did an outstanding job of making this group of characters waaaaaaaay cool again. It sucks when a good book that deserves a chance and has the potential to become a big seller gets clipped even before they have a chance. What sucks even more is they killed Dracula at the end of this issue so they can't even have a Tomb Of Dracula revamp or some kind of miniseries spinning out from this book. I'm really pissed.

OVERALL SERIES GETS 5 OUT OF 5! Go out and buy the 2 TPB's and you'll agree.

Green Lantern #44

Continuing "Blackest Night", Martian Manhunter comes to "convert" Hal and Barry to the Black Lantern Corps. The two men are characters who've died and come back and Death wants them. The really cool part about this story line so far is that the Black Lanterns aren't just zombified versions of heroes and villians, they retain a resemblance of their former selves. I can't wait to see what happens next.

5 out of 5

Blackest Night : Tales Of The Corps #2

Picking up right where last issue left off, we see how easily it is to give in to the different spectrums of the emotional wheel that are the different corps. In this issue we see how a beautiful angel can become a murdering Red Lantern, Carol Ferris gives in to her love for Hal and joins the Sapphire Lanterns as she's told she's going to be the one to save him and we see just how greedy Larfleeze and the Orange Lanterns truly are. AWESOME!

5 out of 5

Last Resort #1

So, being bored and sitting in front of the computer all day, I come across books sometimes that look interesting enough to make me seek them out. This is one of those books. The cover got me at first because I like Amanda Conner's artwork and I really dig what Palmiotti & Gray do for Jonah Hex so I decided to check out "Last Resort". Pretty freaking awesome. The first 3 pages had me gasp, laugh and smile all at once. It's a story about a bunch of different people (LOST-ESQUE) going on vacation to an island. Bad weather hits the plane and they are forced to land on an island newly inhabited by...... READ THE BOOK!!!

5 out of 5

CyberForce / Hunter Killer #1

AWESOME!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMETHING NEW FROM BOTH TEAMS FOREVER IT SEEMS!!! Do yourself a favor, if you've never read either book Cyberforce or Hunter Killer, go out and read these first!
Cyberforce Vol.III: #1-6 (April 2006 - Ongoing), Hunter-Killer Volume 1 (v. 1) and the just finished FUSION for more back story. You will love it I promise!

5 out of 5

on a side note, I was going to review Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man #600's but I really really didn't care for them and I didn't feel like wasting my whole review complaining about how nothing really significant or really exciting happened in either book... If you want to hear me bitch about it, just message me @ gorejones@gmail.com and we can talk about whatever forever.. haha.

Now the books I'm jonesin' for this week!

Previews and Reviews with Gore Jones

I don't even want to waste your time yammering on about nothing..lets get into the books dagnabit!

Blackest Night #1

I've been thinking all week what I'm going to say about this book... I can't think of anything better than.. OH MY F_ _ KIN GOD!!! haha.. This book has been a year or so in the works and all us loyal Green Lantern fans have been eagerly awaiting it since the end of the Sinestro Corps War. The Black rings are distributed and the chaos ensues. If you love Zombies and want to see a new and creative way of the "Undead Medium" This is the book for you. My Girlfriend who has never read GL or any real superhero book in her life loved the book and can't wait for more. Do yourself a favor and get into this now before it sells out and you're that poor sap who missed out!

5 out of 5!!!

Blackest Night Tales Of The Corps #1

Continuing Blackest Night, we get a glimpse into the different colors of the emotional spectrum and how key players got their respective rings. Awesome stories explaining who's who and how they got their rings. Everything Blackest Night has my approval thus far!

5 out of 5

Dark Avengers #7

This being the 3rd installment of the "Utopia" storyline things are starting to really take shape. Emma is begining to really see Norman Osborn for what he really is, Beast isn't doing to good, Daken is starting to be resented by his fellow "Dark Avengers" and Cyclops tells Osborn to SURRENDER!. AWESOME!

5 out of 5!

Deadpool #12

This issue got under my skin a little. The fact that Bullseye and Deadpool are pretty much evenly matched in battle is pretty basic knowledge, yet Daniel Way felt compelled to make Deadpool the winner in this fight between the two. The fact that it is Deadpool's book and it would suck for him to lose in his own title but the fact that Bullseye buys Deadpool out of killing him is really stupid. I'm sorry, Bullseye would've thrown a grain of sand in his brain or something to get out of losing the fight the way he did. As I said before this issue got under my skin when I finished it and yelled "Bull$%&@".

3 out of 5

Creepy Comics #1

Wow! This book had me from the first page to the last page. I really enjoyed every story and I'm mad that the next issue doesn't come out til October!.. Books like this are far and few between nowadays. This had the art, the story and UNCLE F'N CREEPY to keep the blood chilled.. hahaha. Fans of horror, good stories or something NEW / OLD that gave their parents a fright should go and get this now!

5 out of 5!!!

Now the books that I'm Jonesin' for this week!

Previews and Reviews with Gore Jones

Whuddup comic book fans! another week down and here we are again. This week was kinda small but non the less some great stuff came out....

Green Lantern #43

It begins here! The first Black Lantern is born. William Hand aka Black Hand becomes the first in line to become a Lantern of Death. This issue gives us a background on Black Hand and how all along he was destined to become the messenger of death. Amazing! Geoff Johns is the man! This week "BLACKEST NIGHT #1" COMES OUT!

Wednesday Comics #1

This week, DC started their new weekly series simply called "Wednesday Comics". I was skeptical to buy this due to the fact that "Trinity" was terrible and I didn't want to get sucked into buying another weekly book that wastes my time and my money. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this newspaper comic. It's very nostalgic to be reading comics in a newspaper medium.
Kudos go out to DC for trying something new and remembering their comic roots. Good stuff! My only complaint is $3.99 for a "Newspaper" is a little steep..

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #36

Peter Parker meets the Reilly's. Peter annoys JJJ. Spidey gets some love from Boston and learns that Ben Reilly aka The Spider Clone isn't dead and may be out there in the world causing trouble. This is what an annual should be. I was a fan of the "Clone Saga" and I'm excited to see how this adds to the already out of control saga that is Spider-Man.

Dark X-Men The Begining #1

We saw the formation and first mission of the newly formed "Dark X-Men" in the Dark Avengers / X-Men Utopia one shot, now we get to see three individual stories focusing on Namor, Mimic and Dark Beast. Paul Cornell has a great way of making Norman Osborn seem like his intentions are for the better of society when in reality he's just moving people like chess pieces on a board. In the Namor story (which Namor is in the shower and naked during the whole conversation) Norman plays like he knows why Namor is really joining this team, not for the benefit of the Atlantean people but for the simple fact that he's the first documented mutant. In the Mimic story he's trying to help Mimic come to terms with being bi-polar and tells him that he can help him. In the Dark Beast story he tells "DARK" Hank McCoy that he can test on mutants. Thats all he needs to persuade him to join up. All in all really cool, sucks that it's only a three issue mini but who knows what'll happen.

Gravel #12

All I'm going to say is black magic involving smoking crack with aborted fetuses. Warren Ellis is a mad genius and I strongly urge you to go and check out this and all his other comics. You will not be disappointed ever!

Previews and Reviews with Gore Jones

Happy Belated Birthday America! I hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday weekend, now onto this weeks picks....

Greek Street #1

At the recommendation of Socko, I went and spent the whopping dollar for the first issue of this new Vertigo series. Peter Milligan takes the concept of the greek tragedies and gives them a modern day spin. To be honest if you don't know anything about greek mythology you're going to be kinda lost at first. It's a little confusing and isn't really a first issue setup like most books start out but non the less it's a really good read and with Davide Gianfelice's artwork, makes it stand out and force you to want to turn the page.
3 out of 5

Green Lantern Corps #38

Goddamn!! Blackest Night is going to be the sickest storyline DC has given us since Crisis On Infinite Earths. In this issue we find The Green Lantern Battery destroyed on Oa, The Corps in shambles spread throughout the galaxy fighting Red and Yellow Lanterns and The Alpha Lanterns executing the escaped prisoners from the science cells (which is how the Black Lantern's are going to have a massive army...) Damn! I cannot wait for the actually series to come out already. Geoff Johns is killing it over in GL and Peter Tomasi is doing just as well with the GLC. Get these lead-up issues now before they become impossible to find and you're left out in the cold!
5 out of 5!!

Justice League Cry For Justice #1

Series like this, be it a mini or a maxi usually don't go over well because they have a sense of out of continuity storylines. This book being the case in point. We find the League on the Watchtower talking with Hal Jordan (who is nowhere near the Watchtower or the League in GL) about how things have changed and how Hal feels that the League should be taking a proactive stance as opposed to just sitting around for the bad guys to start trouble. Hal brings up a lot of good points about how they just seem to always sit around and wait for something to happen and look what happens..they're always losing friends because they didn't act when they had the chance. Aside from that it's all little side shots of different characters all seeking the same thing "Justice". I really like the concept of someone finally addressing the fact that that they do essentially sit and wait for something to happen but at this point in time it seems pointless because most of the League isn't really in the League, particularly GL and Superman. I'm not going to bash it because it is only the first issue but unless your a fan of the DCU or the Justice League, you may be lost or really disappointed.

Captain America Reborn #1

I'm going to make this short and sweet because I could spend all day talking about this comic and Cap in general. Do yourself a favor if you've been watching from the sidelines or your behind on Cap...Go get all the Trades and then read this book. There are a lot of references to stuff that happened in the series that didn't make sense til now. So many things are happening at once that unless your up to date you'll be scratching your head as to what's going on. And thats that! Brubaker makes me wanna punch him because it's just so well thought out and structured.
5 out of 5

Uncanny X-Men #513

Continuing "Utopia", San Fran is put under martial law, The X-Men are wanted criminals and the White Queen finally shows her true colors.. Norman Osborn..I love you!. Read this book or else! I can't tell you anything because there's so much revealed it would ruin the story for you.

My picks for this week in comics:

Green Lantern #43
Batman #688
Red Robin #2
DArk X-men #1
The Darkness #78

thats all for me..til next week. LEAVE ME SOME LOVE AND COMMENTS!

OMG! ITZ JOJO'S BLOG!

Hey Everybody. This is my first contribution to the new and improved CBJ blog and i'd just like to thank everybody for their positive feedback on the new design for the site. We worked hard to get this together and i'm glad it's working out finally. The old site had a lot of kinks and we're still working to get this site up to its full potential. If you have any suggestions feel free to email us and let us know! We're here for you guys! We want to make your comics experience a magical experience full of high contrast typographic blogging! i'm serious!!!

Anyway a HUGE reason why i haven't really blogged yet is a lack of material to blog about. I honestly haven't been reading comics the way i used to since i got myself a full time job somewhere that isn't a comic book store. But since we got this blog up on the page i've been itching and scratching trying to figure out what it is about current comics that is blowing my mind right now. It's hard to say really... my weekly stash includes a healthy sampling of marvel books, some BPRD and related books. I love CRIMINAL! Incognito is great so far... Pretty much anything that Brubaker is doing makes me happy masks or no masks. I'm in love with the off the wall storytelling that is Dave Lapham's YOUNG LIARS. I also recently (FINALLY!) started to dive into Stan Sakai's Kurosawa inspired cartoon epic USAGI YOJIMBO. There's lots of other books and i'm sure you read them or will read them when they are collected properly so i'm still sort of at a loss as far as comics that i read regularly. So what i want to do for you guys is review books that you might have come across, looked over and thought to yourself "One day i'll read this." The problem being that you still need to be persuaded and maybe blogging about these books will get you to the shop and get it in your hands. Hey, don't get upset! It happens to all of us... Sometimes it takes me months to trust someone's word on a book and finally see what the hub ub is all about! I remember when the first issue of the walking dead came out.. I was working at a shop and i read it and JUST PLAIN DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE IT A CHANCE... So months (maybe even a year?) go by and the damn book keeps selling out. I eventually got on the bandwagon and BAM! now i'm in love. Anyway.. That will be my mission on this blog... to hip you to books that you probably aren't reading. Does that seem condescending? I swear that's not my intention at all.. I just want everyone to read good comics!

So here we go... my first review... take a deep breath...

LOW MOON
by Jason

I started reading Jason's work a few years ago when i picked up WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS.. A Hitchcockian thriller where a John Everyman character is framed for the murder of his best friend. I recommend it to anybody who is in the market for a really well told, well executed noir comic experience. Jason's use of the ligne claire style popularized in Herge's TIN TIN comics won me over immediately. Not only is he using this style in an interesting way (incorporating anthropomorphic cats, dogs and birds into a sprawling economically rendered world), but he's taking it and pushing to make it his own. After reading it i immediately started picking up every Jason book i could find.. Thankfully Fantagraphics has made Jasons work readily available in U.S. comics shops so you don't have to pull your hair out to find these books! WE HAVE THEM HERE!

Anyway, as far as LOW MOON is concerned, I was at MOCCA a few weeks ago and i caught a glimpse of LOW MOON at the Fantagraphics booth. I was pretty stoked to see a new Jason book. I had no idea it was out.. i didn't even know it was coming out. It was like Christmas in June. I went back to the booth a few minutes later and all the copies were gone.. Sigh... Then a friend of mine pointed out that Jason was there, signing stacks of them... I met Jason... It was fairly awkward.. He drew a cartoon dog version of me smoking a cigarette in the inside of the book to make sure that i will love and cherish it forever. I took it home and ate it up.

LOW MOON is a fairly modest collection of short stories Jason had done in the last couple of years, including a short comic that he contributed to the New York Times some time ago which you can read here.. A spaghetti western where the game of Chess is the ultimate duel. Although the stories are short, they are perfect examples of  Jason's unique style, isolating compositions, and spot on pacing. Low Moon is a must have on my bookshelf, and i recommend it to anyone who is interested in sampling his work. I guarantee you will come back for more, and believe me, he's got lots of work to offer.

That's it for now, kids... i hope this wasn't a huge waste of time for you, because i'm pretty sure i'll be doing this again in the very near future.
